Code of Conduct

August 29, 2023

This document is meant to be edited, amended and changed as needed as we learn and become more precise about the needs of our space.

Upon entering RAUM, you commit to upholding the guidelines set in this code of conduct, which deeply values inclusivity and diversity. We trust in your capacity to exhibit respect, enhance our community, and adhere to the following behavioral principles: showing courtesy, avoiding assumptions, practicing politeness and spatial awareness, nurturing an open and non-judgmental attitude, and honoring privacy. Our core objective is to ensure everyone‘s positive experience, regardless of background, identity, or beliefs. To cultivate an environment in line with this goal, it‘s crucial for all to acknowledge diverse perspectives, understand the impact of their behavior on others, and respect the door policy that balances security and freedom for all in our club. By embracing inclusivity, we create a space where every individual feels valued and welcomed, fostering a sense of belonging for all who walk through our doors. RAUM is an ever-evolving space. We will always be learning as we go, and hope so will others.

INSIDE THE CLUB

Everyone entering RAUM is considered a guest and will be treated accordingly. Our staff holds the authority to issue warnings, and remove, or potentially ban guests or individuals associated with RAUM if they engage in undesirable behavior. In cases of verbal misconduct, a warning will be given, with the severity and accumulation of these warnings depending on the situation. For behaviors such as inappropriate remarks and attitudes, our staff can give warnings and take action, including potentially removing the person involved. Any intentional, direct, or aggressive (physical) behavior will lead to immediate removal by our staff and may result in a possible ban. Bans can vary in duration, ranging from 3 or 6months to a year, or sometimes indefinitely. We involve first responders or notify authorities only if someone has endangered themselves, other guests, or the space.

ADDRESS US

While we, as CLUB RAUM, establish preventivemeasures, it‘s crucial for us to maintain open channels ofcommunication in case of unwelcome experiences. Wehave implemented certain tools for reaching out, includingdesignated email contacts and an awareness team. During club nights, our awareness team will be easily identifiable and accessible. Additionally, for any concerns, you canreach us via email at feedback@clubraum.nl at any time. Allfeedback will be handled with confidentiality (unless legallybound otherwise).

CONSENT IS KEY

The principle of consent upholds the safety and well-being of our guests, artists, and staff at CLUB RAUM. It asserts that everyone possesses the right to autonomy over their personal space. When entering someone else‘s space or intending to share your own with others, it becomes essential to seek consent.Consent is the voluntary agreement or explicit permission given by one person to another for a particular action. It can only be valid when all parties involved fully understand the action, its likely consequences, and have the option to refuse without pressure. The absence of a „no“ should never be interpreted as a „yes,“ and respecting a „no“ is crucial. This principle applies to various contexts within your experience at RAUM, ranging from standing, talking, drinking, and dancing together to more intimate interactions such as touching, kissing, and engaging in sexual activities. It‘s important to recognize that individual experiences of a situation may differ greatly. Thus, creating a safer environment at RAUM involves actively checking if someone is comfortable with any engagement before initiating it, be it conversation, dancing, or any physical contact.

Regarding sexual consent, it specifically pertains to all forms of intimate physical contact and sexual interactions, whether verbal or nonverbal. At RAUM, we encourage seeking „affirmative consent,“ which means explicitly obtaining an enthusiastic and ongoing „yes“ from all involved parties.Affirmative consent should never be assumed and can be withdrawn at any time. It‘s essential to recognize that affirmative consent cannot be given by someone who is unable to comprehend the situation due to factors like age, drug/alcohol use, mental disabilities, or unconsciousness. Silence or prior consent does not imply ongoing consent.

Regarding alcohol and drugs, their impact varies on individuals, making it challenging to determine a person‘s ability to give clear consent. Thus, obtaining affirmative consent and regularly checking in with the person after initiating physical contact remains vital. It‘s crucial to understand that consent does not exist if the initiator of sexual activity knew or should have known about the other person‘s incapacitation. Being intoxicated is never an excuse, as individuals are accountable for their behavior and responsible for obtaining consent when initiating physical or sexual contact.

CLUB RAUM strives for inclusivity

As mentioned before, RAUM is an ever-evolving space.Meaning that we will be working hard to be accessible for all bodies, but that the space is limiting in its earliest form. We craft and adapt the space along the way so that it will be accessible for people in wheelchairs. This document will be adapted along with the evolution of the space. That having said, we strive to be considerate and offer tailored assistance when possible or needed. Guests with physical disabilities can find benches and rest areas to accommodate their needs. For neurodivergent individuals, those with mentaldisabilities, or those needing a break from the party environment, the awareness team is available to assist.

CLUB RAUM is an equitable space

An equitable space prioritizes creating an environment where individuals can feel comfortable enough to engage respectfully with each other. To achieve this, RAUM sets standards, including the code of conduct, house rules, policies(door policy, drugs policy, neurodiversity, and guestlist), (internal) protocols (way of working, awareness team, and customer feedback), staff manual, and defined roles. These measures aim to level the ground and facilitate meaningful interactions among people.

CLUB RAUM fights racism

RAUM acknowledges that racism is a deeply entrenched issue that perpetuates discrimination and inequality based on one‘s race or ethnicity. Our commitment to dismantling racism is evident through proactive measures, such as promoting inclusivity, educating our community, and facilitating open dialogues about racial injustices. We understand that eradicating racism demands unwavering dedication and collective action. By continuously educating ourselves and holding ourselves accountable.

CLUB RAUM fights ableism

Ableism exemplifies systemic internalized behavior, often manifested unconsciously in language usage. It involves using words related to someone‘s physical or mental condition inappropriately, thereby excluding them from the social narrative while employing their condition as a derogatory expression.Additionally, our society often lacks awareness or training to recognize and handle neurodivergent, impeded, or assisted ways of communication (such as lack of eye contact, stuttering, or AAC devices). This lack of awareness can lead to impatience, condescension, or dismissal.

CLUB RAUM fosters awareness

If someone is excessively intoxicated, it is crucial not to leave them alone. Instead, seek help immediately, either from the awareness team or other staff members. When informing the staff or awareness team, provide details about the type of drug used or the amount of alcohol consumed, along with the symptoms. Rest assured that you will not face penalties for seeking assistance. The priority is always the health and safety of the person in question. RAUM adopts an awareness approach when it comes to drugs, meaning we will seek appropriate options for handling the situation. Banning someone is a last resort and only considered when the person‘s behavior poses harm to themselves, others, or the space.

CLUB RAUM listens

RAUM makes every effort to prevent such situations by setting clear rules, protocols, and expectations for their staff, partners, artists, and guests. However, instances may still arise in places where many people gather. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, reach out to the awareness team (in the club) or any staff member. They will ensure a suitable solution is found for the situation. If you wish to express thoughts, concerns, or feedback regarding such instances, you can use the email address feedback@clubraum.nl at any time.

CLUB RAUM is a place for play and freedom

Intruding on a space and its people for personal pleasure or curiosity is voyeurism. While curiosity itself may not be inherently wrong, intrusive behavior without obtaining consent becomes problematic. RAUM aims to create an environment where people can enjoy themselves without constantly being subjected to objectification or judgment. In this context, voyeurism refers to appropriating space for individual gratification and judgment, rather than fostering shared enjoyment.

What is the difference between unintended and intended unwanted behavior? The distinction between unintend and intended unwanted behaviour hinges on the intention behind the actions. Unintended unwanted behaviour occurs without malicious intent, often due to lack of awareness or consideration of the consequences. Intended unwanted behaviour, on the other hand, is purposeful and calculated, with the aim of causing harm or discomfort to others through the chosen actions, words, or attitudes.

CLUB RAUM is constantly learning

RAUM acknowledges that cultural appropriation, queer baiting, and gatekeeping are sensitive topics that need careful consideration. Instead of having specific rules, RAUM prioritizes awareness and handles situations on a case-by-case basis. The focus is on addressing the individuals involved with sensitivity and empathy. Guests are encouraged not to take matters into their own hands but to reach out to the awareness team for assistance. RAUM takes these issues seriously and will take appropriate actions if someone is misappropriating cultures or identities. As a community committed to continuous growth, we understand that mistakes are inevitable despite our best efforts to prevent them, but we humbly pledge to learn from them. Our ultimate goal is to strive towards a safer space, acknowledging that while we can never guarantee absolute safety, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone‘s voice is heard and respected.
